Understanding how to make contact with your friends online can be very tricky. Trying not to offend others while marketing can be what seems to be an impossible mission. I have tons of friends I’ve meet online but many of them don’t even know I blog here at SEOMKT.

I’ve managed to use twitter to successfully market and promote my blog articles. Over the last week I’ve been manually private messaging my friends requesting comment exchange with their blogs. When doing this you have to be very sincere with your followers. If you promise a comment exchange you better be ready to return the favor.

The Positive

Obviously the positive side to this affect is an increase in participation on your blog. Your friends click the link, visit your blog and have a look at your latest articles. They find something that interests them and they leave a comment. The end result for your blog again is an increase in comments and in return you visit their blog and engage with them.

The Negative

Not everyone likes this method of communication. Private messaging people on twitter with links can result in some upset friends. I’ve been lucky and haven’t had one complaint yet about my marketing methods. You could potentially get upset replies from friends but it’s up to you to decide if 20 comments is worth one upset online friend. from me I believe the comments out weight the negative side affects.

Take Note

One thing I’ve noticed is twitter has a bug in their private messaging which makes it appear as if you didn’t send your message but you actually did. When you send a message sometimes it doesn’t appear and looks as if your friend didn’t receive it. Rest assured they did it’s just that you that can’t see it. This has only happened twice and one of my friends actually messaged me back asking if I sent the message enough. Naturally I messaged her back apologizing and stated what actually happened.

End results

The end result and overall experience for the past week has been extremely positive. I’ve managed to get my friends commenting and participating on my blog. Now let’s get something straight here before you go and start spamming a bunch of people on twitter.

1. Only message people you built relationships with in the past
2. Don’t send the same message twice even if it’s a different day
3. Do not automate the process be as human as possible
4. Message them back if they reply with questions

Thankfully my social network Blog Engage will help you accomplish this.

Everything I have done to date regarding marketing or promoting has been by myself and my fellow bloggers at little or no cost to me. The only cost is my time and willingness to actively promote the site. The idea’s I share below I did for a large social network but the same can be done for your personal blog.

Be specific when you start marketing and promoting. Stay within your niche. I would like to reference an article I wrote in September 2008. It’s a nice list of suggestions you can use to market and promote successfully in any website forum.

Increase Website Traffic by using Top Webmaster Forums

Website Review Forums – Website reviews are perfect ways to jump start the traffic flow to your website. At this point you should be creating a basic template for a Website review request which can be used with little change at all the webmaster forums your sign up at. Don’t forget in this process you should include a website url to the website under review. If you want to be very specific you can ask for reviews on multiple pages which have minor differences in design and or reasoning.

Domain Name Appraisal Forums – Another great reason to post a website url. Simply ask the members to appraise the domain name and when adding a live link 99% of the time they will also visit your website! Trust me add the link these guys giving free review are deadly bored think about the service there offering for free! Use a similar script as mentioned in the above paragraph and make minor changes for each forum.

Buy, Sell or Trade Forums – The mother of all examples is this amazing forum. It’s like a free ticket to extremely exploit your website url with so many different way to do so. The best thing about the Buy, Sell or Trade Forums is they normally have about 10 other forums inside them. The sub forums you should be looking for include the following and sometimes you might have reasoning for the rest but normally these are great forums to start with,

Freebies – If you are offering any sort of free services or products (or seeking them), this is the only place those offers should be posted. Remember to always add your url when offering these services especially if it involves your website.
Content – Users buying and selling content (including databases) can conduct business here. This is another forum you should be adding your url too and again especially if it’s pertaining to your website!

Templates – Post your url when asking for custom or free template! Make sure the members know what website you are looking to replace the current template on.

Services – Offering free services on your website? This is the forum you should be posting inside. Always add the url where the free services are located allowing you to gain another back link and increased traffic.

Link Exchange – This is another great way to get a back link. Post your url and offer a link exchange with other webmaster forum members. This will generate a nice wave of website traffic as all people willing to link exchange will want to see the website there dealing with.

Link Sales -  Selling links from your website? Have an empty sidebar you don’t know what to do with? Again this is another forum for yet another back link. Post your website url and sell your link spots!

Contests – Everyone loves contests but we can’t join if we don’t know what website is offering the contest so yup, another back link opportunity! Post your website url and tell all webmaster about this awesome contest!

Take it into consideration and start implementing it! This is the way of webmaster forums and if done right you will gain traffic and new blog readers.

After weeks of blogging I started marketing my website within social communities such as mybloglog, blogcatalog and I just wasn’t getting much of a response. I would spend hours marketing to gain new readers and create back links. Little did I know the entire community was NO Follow and they were out ranking me for my own articles and keywords.

I wasn’t blogging here at the time I was blogging on the Blog Engage Social Blog. Two years have passed and I have the same expectations from blogging now as I did back then. I created Blog Engage to be the exact opposite of these communities. I wanted to create a unique environment for bloggers to meet, share and discuss.

I guess the main concern here is wasting our time marketing in any given website that doesn’t provide some sort of return on investment. The community, Website or Forum has to have the ability to give back equal or greater result from the efforts put into these social activities.

This got me thinking and eventually I decided I should put together a list of things you should look for when considering marketing your blog within any forum or community website.

• The website should be Do Follow

• The website should have members with similar interests as you

• Clean and fast loading design for productivity

• Dedicated and committed members

• Already large sized community (existing user base)

• Dedicated moderators ensuring a safe and clean visit

• Nice and friendly environment for learning

• Updated member profiles

• Unique website content

Blogging is your hobby and when you join a community you have to ensure it’s a community that will help you grow. Remember this is the main reason you have decided to join the forum. If it’s not able to meet your needs as a blogging marketer I would suggest leaving and moving onto the next community.

I wrote an article sometime ago helping people understand forum marketing a little better maybe it’s still worth reading. I share some great ways to take advantage of forums without becoming overwhelming and spammy.

Trust me when I say theirs a fine line between online marketing and spamming.
