This weeks Blog Engage challenge is all about guest blogging and sharing your thoughts on why it’s beneficial as a blogger to guest post.

I’ve been blogging now for three years and I must admit this is one area I haven’t done much work in. I’ve guest posted on famous Bloggers and a few other places but nothing that is to be considered a marketing ploy.

I do however fully understand the benefits of guest blogging and always try to promote guest blogging at blog engage to our members. I think it’s an amazing way to build your followers and create a strong online brand for yourself.

Exposure for your blog

Maybe you just started your blog and your looking to get word out about it. Guest blogging is a great way to tell a larger established group of readers as your post will usually include a plug about yourself and your blog. Just be sure you are guest blogging on a blog that relates to your own blog.

Exposure for yourself

Maybe your interested in getting your freelance writing skills noticed, or your knowledge on a specific topic. Like I mentioned in your BIO you can introduce yourself and give a way for others to get in touch with you.

A link back to your own blog

It is generally acceptable to include a link back to an article you wrote previously on your blog as long as it fits in the article and offers the reader value. At the very least your plug will include a link back to your blog offering you another valuable incoming link. You can also add links into your BIO on most guest blogs.

Building Relationships

I’ve meet so many people online during my last guest blogging contest at famous bloggers. I managed to gain many new Blog Engage members, rss customers and new blog readers. This has allowed our community to continue growing and excelling.

Creating Authority

Guest blogging can help you build authority in the blogosphere and help you gain respect from your fellow bloggers. This is how you can start making a name for yourself. Don’t miss out on these amazing marketing opportunities.

This weeks Blog Engage challenge is all about uncommon ways to monetize your blog. The important thing to remember is the challenge requires you to think out side of the box and come up with ways others may not have thought of to generate a revenue from their blog.

I’ll be the first to admit this is not easy and will require some thinking on my part. From the post rules we can’t use the traditional methods such as Google Adsense, Kontera or 125 ad sales for your sidebar.

To provide value to my readers and perhaps search engine visits in the future I’m going to list many methods as opposed to simply one or two. Some you may be familiar with and hopefully others will be new and will help you make money in non traditional methods.

1. Spotlight other Bloggers

Assuming your blog has a high volume of traffic you can spotlight bloggers on your blog for a fee. This is a great way to build on relationships with other blogger while at the same time generating extra income. I strongly suggest only spotlighting bloggers that are in your niche and woudl be an interest to your readers. Simply visit the bloggers blog, use the contact form and pitch the idea of a spotlight for a fee averaging from 5 usd to 11 usd per spotlight.

2. Offer Blogging Services

Offer your own services to your readers. You can write for them, or let them write on your blog for a fee. Traditionally you would let them write for free but if your blog is popular and there is a demand you can simply charge them per post.

3. Offer WordPress Installation Services

Personally I have tons of experience and if I wanted I could offer my expertise with installing, managing and hosting my readers word press sites. I could charge a fee for our services such as SEO, installation and more. Sometimes we take what we know for granted when there’s tons of people out there’s till wondering who they can start blogging.

I’ll be honest this was a very difficult challenge. I hope some of my ideas work out for you and help generate more income on your blogs.

If your looking for some more traditional ways to monetize your blog make sure to check out this amazing article I found 28 Ways to Make Money with Your Website.

Last night I had one of the worst experiences ever as the owner of a large social network for bloggers named blog engage. The evening started like any other when I have cool website stuff to do. I get home and I’m extremely excited about the possibility of moving off the current software I’m using to run the site. (pligg)

Needless to say things didn’t go as smooth as I thought and I lost about 5 days worth of blog comments on my community blog. Now under any other circumstances this woudln’t be a big deal but right now we have a huge 1000 USD best of the guest blogger contest going on.

Point being these aren’t my comments I’m losing these are members comments on the guest articles. I was extremely stressed out and aggressively trying to find some way I could restore the comments I may have lost.

After getting the websites back up and running I started re posting articles for the members because about 9 articles were also lost as well. After visiting Google cache and hours of re entering comments I decided it was time to go to bed. (3:30am). I did the most I could to get the blog up to date bad back into working form.

The point of today’s article wasn’t supposed to be about my story of how I messed up but rather a story of a community that cares enough to forget, work hard, forgive and move forward.

I could barely sleep last night because as a blogger I understand how hard it is to produce quality content and get comments. I know what it takes to be a blogger and for this reason I was sick to my stomach. I was feeling upset that I didn’t do more to save the data. I just couldn’t sleep with all the thoughts going through my head.

So this morning I posted an article letting the members know of the incident and laid out the bad news. I said many comments had been lost, I saved what I could and I was trying to express my sincerest apologies to all guest blogging contestants.

In all honestly I expected the members to be very upset at me. I’ve watched our contestants work hard over the last 40 days promoting and marketing their articles. Naturally they should had been mad and upset this is how life works. To my surpirse the reaction from our members to say the least was quite opposite of my expectations.

I want to share with you some of the comments our contest members wrote. Surprisingly a positive twist and one I didn’t expect. It just goes to show it’s not the website that makes the community, it’s the community that makes the website.

Sure, maybe this question should also include website or online activities but the question still remains the same. Would you actually risk losing your job or career to continue your online activities?

Many people take their online blogging very seriously and perhaps only enjoy their current career because it allows them time throughout the day to participate in their online social media activities.

What would you do if suddenly your internet activity was being tracked and your favorite websites started getting banned from web surfing filters? What would you do if you could no longer work and play online?

I assume this is a big question for many people that have online activities and or online blogs. Owning a blog can have negative affects on ones career. Learning how to separate the two can be difficult and at times the beginning of the end for your career.

For me the answer is yes. I would risk my career for my online activities and my blog because it’s the one thing I truly love and enjoy doing. I don’t think my wife would like this answer but I truly believe my online activities would lead to a far happier life then my career would ever offer me.

I also believe that I have more potential for success with my online activities. Perhaps it’s not from my blog or from other websites I own but it’s the social networking aspect that can lead to bigger things in life, greater opportunities.

Being happy is really important to me and right now in my life I’m a happy man. I enjoy my job, I enjoy my online activities and nothing will come between the two. The only thing I would never trade is my family. So far it’s just my wife and I but soon we will have children and perhaps my decisions would change with these types of new responsibilities.

Right now I have little or no financial obligations so the impact of losing a career would be minimal. This isn’t to say I don’t respect my career and job I’m just saying if I got canned I would be just fine and would land on my two feet very fast.

If I was to lose my job I don’t think I would look for a new one right away. I would give online blogging a full time opportunity for at least 60 – 90 days. I would try to start earning full time from online activities. As I think about working as a full time blogger and get really excited. This is something I’ve always wanted to do but just justify it to my wife.

Take a minute and let me know your thoughts. Would you risk your job for your blog?

One of the most interesting aspects of owning an online blog is meeting people from all over the world. Let’s take this morning for example.

I started moderating the website and checking my e-mails. I normally get about 5 or 6 new followers on twitter a day but at times most are spammers that follow then unfollow right after. However I do manage to get new followers that are real people.

This morning I meet Mike Pedersen and the interaction we had was made possible to this amazing and exciting new world of social media marketing. Now Mike is a new member at blog engage and we have started creating a mutual beneficial relationship with one another.

By far meeting new people is the most exciting aspect of being an online blogger and marketer. I enjoy following them to their blog, voting on their articles at blog engage and so much more. It’s even more interesting when they have similar interests as you do.

I have a very open personality and I think this has helped my create such a great blogging community for us to all use. I think Blog Engage and it’s Brand has taken a lot of my personal attributes and over time has created a positive learning environment for bloggers.

I remember when I first started Blog Engage and I was marketing across multiple website forums. I stopped off at one is specific named admin zone. It’s pretty much a community of website owners that share and gather ideas.

Out of all the places I marketed this was the only forum that came back with a negative reply to my post. The member asked me why they should join my website when I have little or no traffic and members. I insisted it was beneficial for more then one reason.

Do Follow BackLinks

New Readers

Increase in SERP

Two years later Blog Engage has grown to over 3000 registered members and is within the top 12,000 websites on the internet for website traffic and daily unique visits. If I was to be asked the same questions I’m sure the answer would be the same but with a little addition including the benefits to having a large community and generating free blog traffic.

I guess the lesson to learn here is no matter how small a community is there’s always a benefit to joining and participating. Gaining new readers is vital and we can all use do follow back links. Even the smallest community can have some of the greatest members and biggest opportunities.

Be sure to add me as a friend, bbrian017

I visited twitter today and I seen @robertbravery post a message re tweeting @EricaMueller post regarding marketing her blog and how to determine where to spend the majority of your time.

I guess the main concern here is wasting our time marketing in any given website that doesn’t provide some sort of return on investment. The community, Website or Forum has to have the ability to give back equal or greater result from the efforts put into these social activities.

This got me thinking and eventually I decided I should put together a list of things you should look for when considering marketing your blog within any forum or community website.

The website should be Do Follow

The website should have members with similar interests as you

Clean and fast loading design for productivity

Dedicated and committed members

Already large sized community (existing user base)

Dedicated moderators ensuring a safe and clean visit

Nice and friendly environment for learning

Updated member profiles

Unique website content

Blogging is your hobby and when you join a community you have to ensure it’s a community that will help you grow. Remember this is the main reason you have decided to join the forum. If it’s not able to meet your needs as a blogging marketer I would suggest leaving and moving onto the next community.

I wrote an article sometime ago helping people understand forum marketing a little better maybe it’s still worth reading. I share some great ways to take advantage of forums without becoming overwhelming and spammy.

Trust me when I say theirs a fine line between online marketing and spamming.

If you have any questions, comments or opinions I would love to hear from you. Place a comment below and I’ll be sure to read it.

I’m always happy to take part in the blog engage weekly word challenge. This week it’s about making money from online blogging. Read more about it on the community blog.

In all reality generating a steady online income from blogging is really hard. Trying to find products or services your readers are interested in takes time and research. Truly understanding your readers needs will determine the level of success you will have when it comes to making money from online blogging.

Target market your advertising

Simply offering your readers Google ads might not prove to be successful. You have to offer more niche related products. For example here on my blog I know the majority of my blog readers are bloggers so I will try to market products and services that apply to their daily life of blogging.

I’m not only marketing to my readers I’m also marketing to my search engine viewers. For this I leave it up to the magic of Google. Google does Geo targeted ads that will apply to all my search engine traffic. They base their ads on my content and keywords allowing me to market random and unknown visitors unrelated to my target market.

Stay ahead of the game

Staying up to date on all the deals and promotions is also important. Make sure to sign up to all the affiliate news letters. This will give you something to talk about with your readers. Adding a referral link with an updated newsletter article will bring you more profits.

A good example of this is one of my latest articles on the blog engage community blog. I wrote about how clix sense was launching a new program called Geo String including a nice 10 USD bonus and my readers followed my links and many of them signed up. All you have to do is be the first to let the people know.

Ad Placement

As much as you hate to place that add in front of your readers you seriously have to. Top right 300 by 300 ad in the start of your article and another half banner add in the article it self. Having the right placement is key to your click rate. Increase visibility and you will increase your clicks.

So many factors come into play when marketing and advertising on your blog. Take all aspects into consideration and perhaps one day you will have success. Making money from blogging is not easy but with time and dedication can be a very realistic and obtainable goals to set.

Where to start?

Understanding where to look for new advertisers and affiliates can be over whelming. I started a very informative page at blog engage a social network I own sharing all the make money online resources I have found to date. I welcome you to visit and use my referral links.

You will find so many opportunities it’s amazing. I have everything from hosting companies affiliates, word press theme and deign affiliates, twitter affiliates, publisher affiliates, niche affiliates, CPC, PPC and more.

If you have any questions, comments or opinions I would love to hear from you. Place a comment below and I’ll be sure to read it.
