Finding out what works for you

Finding out what works for your blog can be a tough and an over whelming process. I’ve seen so many bloggers try to take ideas and suggestions from other popular bloggers and for so many unknown reasons they don’t’ have success.

There’s nothing wrong with taking ideas form other bloggers The real issue arises when you think what works for one blogger will also work for you. This is a bad attitude to have and will not help your blog grow.

Be Unique

Your blog is unique and so are your readers. Understanding what will work for you and what will not work for you is of most importance. You don’t want to waste your time working on activities or marketing methods that bring in little or no results.

Add a twist

Take an idea and make it your own. Add unique aspects to these ideas and try to make them your own. Anything you can do to make your blog or marketing activities stand out is what you should be focusing on. Try and be original and make your readers come back to your blog.

Do something new

Adding a new activity to your blog is always great. I’ve seen many bloggers have great success with adding 5 top articles they read on the week or the top 10 blogger articles for the month. This is always a great way to build on relationships and increase awareness of your blog.

Add an Image

Personally I’m not sure why but adding an image can make the difference between someone visiting again or simply never returning. When blogging a picture really can say 1000 words. If you think it enhances the visitors experience I say go ahead and add an image. Make sure you use a royalty free image so you don’t run into legality issues in the future.

Enhance the users experience

There’s many ways to enhance your visitors experience, practice and test some plugins. This can be done by adding a simple comment luv plugin and allowing your readers a link back to their blog. This can also be achieved by adding a top commentators plugin. Also making your blog do follow will encourage friends to stop by and comment on your blog.

Feedback and Discussions

Being unique is a good way of obtaining and keeping visitors. Many bloggers tend to duplicate what the successful bloggers are doing, and they don’t really add anything new with their blog.

A good example, as you mentioned, is to add an image. You can make such things unique as always finding a humorous image for your posts. I have seen some blogs where they put an amazing photo, such as a still scene, at the top of each post. The image may not be related to the post, but it sure makes the post look good.

Being unique is also in how your write your posts. Each one of us has a unique personality, so when writing a post, let your personality dictate how the post is written.

I completely agree on all of your points. It’s key to give the user the best possible experience for a successful blog. Otherwise you don’t stand out among the ocean of blogs there are out there.

It’s sometimes hard to make your blog feel different by way of design and content as we all are in general using the same tools. So there are 2 things that stand out for me which allow you to have a different voice.

Firstly let you own personality shine through, there is only one of you so put your personal touch on everything you do. Just as in real life not everyone will like you but those that do will stick around and support you.

Secondly, keep it fresh, don’t be afraid to try something new even if you are risking it not working. Readers will some become bored if they are seeing the same sort of stuff all the time.

Thanks for another thoughtful article Brian.

I’ve always enjoyed the theme I use. You know Keller gave this to me for free what a sweetheart. I don’t have an image and I should be looking at one but I never got around to it.

I loved your comment about letting ones personality that is taken for granted so often and we all need to let a little bit of our selves out into our writing it’s what makes us unique.

Thanks again for stopping by Tony it’s been a pleasure conversing with you.

  4. Blogging is a process. It’s similar to growing up. You have to learn to crawl before you can walk, before you run.

You ahve to offer something different, and unique. Else all you efforts are for nothing because then it’s a;; the same.

But therein lies the hard work. Making you blog different from all the others.

This really is a question faced by most blogger, especially the newcomers. What I had success with is focusing on a target group, in my case it was bit easy since I was from Sri Lanka I targeted Sri Lankans.
