I was wrong, I cannot blog for a living but…

Blog Engage RSS Syndication Subscription Service

All last week I was thinking that blogging for a living is something I wanted to do. In all reality this is not what I wanted to do I was simply confused. What I want to do is make a living online while blogging about it. In all reality the chances of my blog earning enough money to accommodate my costs of living is unrealistic.

When did I decide this?

This morning, I was sitting at home with my Tim Hortons coffee and I thought to myself wow last Monday’s article title is very misleading to my readers. I cannot make a living from simply blogging I have to do something online that earns me an income. Kristi made some great suggestions in one of her comments stating most people don’t make money from blogging but rather the activities they do online while blogging.

What’s my activity?

The only activity I do online right now to generate a source of income is the Blog Engage RSS Service. This is my key to success. Right now I have 42 paying customers in which use the Blog Engage RSS Service. In order for me to make a living from my online activities I have to increase my customer accounts. I also have to look at ways to ensure I keep my customers happy and retain them for a long period of time.

Where do I go from here

As we move throughout the week I’ll be talking a lot about the RSS Service and it’s benefits. I will also be discussing ways I can increase the programs popularity while getting positive and constructive criticism feedback with you my readers. Some future articles will include video, forum and other online marketing medians.

Feedback and Discussions

What’s your thoughts on my decision to make a living from my online activities rather then from my blog? Do you agree? Is this idea more realistic and appropriate for my three year get out of debt goal? Also make sure to use the comment luv so I can follow you back to your blog, comment and tweet!

    Hey Brian,

Yeah, I agree with you on this. Its hard to make good money out of blogging. You need something else to go with it. Writing an e-book and selling it would be a good action. Maybe you could provide services like WordPress conversion, help and other stuff. There are a lot of things you can do. And your experience and skill will surely help you. For example, you could promote your website (Seomkt) and make money out of it (through advertisements etc.) There are a lot of oppurtunities out there (Although some require an investment of money). For example : I am going to launch another project : A collaborative effort through bloggers who help others while earning more subcribers (I have named the project “League of Blogger -LOB”. Right now, I am in the process of planning and saving money to setup the website. Anyway, Good luck with your projects !

I think you can make a decent living from blogging but it is a bit hard to achieve that from one blog. You can do that if you are successful like Darren Rowse etc. But if you build multiple blogs with specific niches in mind you can make a decent amount of money. Although having 42 paying customers is always a good thing 🙂

  4. I gather you read my blog post, mention in comentluv below. But yes, blogging alone will not cut it.
Blogging is just a tools for an online business. It’s the online business that makes money.
Well enough of it to live on.
Some blogs can make some money, perhaps enough to pay for the costs of hosting etc.
But making money to live is probably 1000 times more than hosting fees.

The key is a diversity of income revenue streams which originate or has it’s roots in ones blog

Hi Robert, yes I did read your article but ironically I wrote this on Sunday just a little before I read your article. I came to this conclusion from some of the previous comments some of my readers left. I cannot make a living from blogging but rather from what I do with or on my blog. thanks for stopping by and saying hello. As you said the key here is diversity and this is what I have to start working on.

All kidding aside, I guess you just need a business plan in place for you to succeed. While blogging may not be your ticket to working at home, but your idea of creating an Internet business will probably be more sustainable going forward. Making an income online is all about the long-term, and having a good plan in place will help you to achieve your goals.

Hey Brian. I too have recently become convinced that earning a reasonable income strictly from a blog is unrealistic and probably not attainable. There are the select handful of bloggers who can build a blog and make a living, but for the most of us online income will be generated from other endeavors online. That’s why I’m breaking into the niche market, and have put my focus onto building niche sites in 2011. We will see where that goes. But so far my first site (myfireproofsafe.com) is up, and I’m impressed with the traffic in only two weeks with no real link building efforts (yet!).

Hi Daniel, I’ve actually noticed your efforts to market and promote your niche blogs. I think it’s a great idea. The only hard part will be coming up with niche unique content on a consistent basis but I’m sure you will be fine. I’ve started to join some online contests and I’m hoping this will generate some extra coin. make sure to check out my latest post regarding it.

Yeah, blogging for a living sure aint worth the while. you gotta put in alot of hours, but I do also enjoy blogging on interesting fact, and technologies.

  9. Hi Brian,

I started my online career 4 years back. On my 2 years of online career i did not do good. After a lot of researches and study i am able to make a good amount of bucks online using CPA offers and Google Adsense. If you are only depending on one single blog to make a fortune i do not think it will work out well. Why dont you push your strategy a bit further. Do a good keyword research with a low competition keywords and try ranking them.
