I have tried it as well for a blog that I had. Apparently, adding a “leave a reply” column plus “do follow” tag do help to increase my website traffic and web visitors. After about month, I decided to leave it as it is as I received more good comments than those spammy ones. Your web visitors will love this feature.

I use DISQUS as my comment management system , it has threaded comments which makes the comments look more neat , you can reply to comments withing your dashboard and provides good SEO with pagination. Nishadha@Make Money Bloggings last blog post..Best Permalink structure for Wordpress blogs

My own blog at Karlonia.com does not yet have the CommentLuv plugin but it is DoFollow for comments.

Another useful plugin for encouraging comments is KeywordLuv, which allows commenters to choose the anchor text for their links but also allows them to use their real names or usernames. I discovered the KeywordLuv plugin a few months ago, but sadly my theme seems to be incompatible. This probably doesn’t matter much, however; people seem to be doing a good enough job of putting their keywords in the name field anyway

One other way to help encourage more comments is to add links to other sites and blogs in your copy from time to time if you're talking about them. I thought about it while reading your post and was thinking that links to the sites where those two plugins you mentioned would have helped them gain some love, and of course helps make you an authority that others want to come back to read often.
